Here in the Midwest, the weather can get pretty harsh! That means bleak and downright freezing winters. This is made up for by rather gorgeous autumns though. The staff at Kate’s Trailer Sales knows this, and we do everything possible to make sure you purchase the right enclosed trailer when considering the weather.

To help you out on choosing the right enclosed trailer for the weather, we’ll cover a few basics to know before picking a trailer.

Best Enclosed Trailer

Tow Vehicle

Before we get started, let’s talk about your tow vehicle. You more than likely already own a truck or SUV that’s powerful enough to tow your enclosed trailer, but it’s always a good idea to check the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of your vehicle and your trailer to ensure they’re compatible. Simply put, this number is the maximum weight that’s permitted when fully loaded.

Budget

Creating and sticking to a budget is important when searching for any kind of trailer. Especially if you’re just starting out. It will be easier to come up with a budget once you decide the size of the trailer you need and any features that come along with it.

If you need it for your business, it’s worth having a higher budget, because it will more than likely grow over time and that extra space will not go unused. But, if you’re needing a trailer for your ATV or anything that you plan to have for years to come, you’ll probably be able to slide by with purchasing just enough space.

Steel Vs. Aluminum

Choosing between a steel or aluminum trailer is more a financial choice than anything else. But you should still take it into consideration based on the climate you’re in. Aluminum trailers are more expensive, but that investments pay for itself when because it won’t rust and will last longer. Steel trailers are still durable. Choosing the steel doesn’t mean you aren’t choosing a quality trailer. They still make for great, heavy-duty haulers – the level of maintenance might be just a bit higher.

It’s also important to think about weight in this case as well. Aluminum is much lighter than steel.  That could be the deciding factor of which car hauler trailer you choose, depending on the tow vehicle you already have.

Speaking of Aluminum…

It’s a great idea to check out the exterior of the trailer, too, because you want it to withstand the elements. You want to be sure the outside is painted and sealed. (Paint isn’t always just for looks!) Once the water starts to leak in, it can ruin the trailer itself and its contents. If the paint and primer are high enough quality, they can protect the trailer from all kinds of elements. Your best bet is an aluminum roof that wraps all the way around, but the correct paint and primer can also keep water out. Whichever option gives you peace of mind while towing is the one you should choose. No one likes to tow with the idea in mind that their equipment will be destroyed by water!

One more quick thing to look at in a trailer are the axles. They are put through some pretty tough work, and if one of them breaks, it can cause other parts to break. Be sure the trailer is made with a high-quality axle brand.
